Common Mistakes Leaders Make in
Communicating Safety

#7. Not Walking Their Talk

This is one of the most common problems I hear about at safety conventions around the country. I thought we could look at this from several angles. The most obvious is when a leader in a company fails to follow safety procedures or fails to use the proper personal protective equipment. Another one that is much more subtle is telling people safety is number one and then quickly focusing on everything but safety. In my talk, "Safety for Leaders", I point out that safety needs to be a value instead of a priority. Employees can tell the difference very quickly. If they perceive safety is a corporate priority (which can change) they often refer to safety initiatives or programs as the flavor of the day. I can spot leaders who have safety as a value because their employees know they would never sacrifice safety under any circumstances. Do the employees of your company know your leaders hold safety as a value? If not, it's time to help them do so. The problem is that in all the training events, leaders have not, except very few, studied how to communicate such a concept effectively to a varied audience. That is why I have been doing more and more communication skills classes for corporate management teams. Sure, the safety team needs to know how to communicate safety but the management also needs these skills or employees will ignore the safety team and follow the leader.
