Common Mistakes Leaders Make in
Communicating Safety

#5. Talking numbers instead of about people.

One of the most important things to remember about effective communication is to know your audience. If you want to motivate them you must know what will accomplish that. Stressing numbers only is an easy trap to fall into because the leadership of the company is responsible for budgets and or profits. While those may be great motivators for you or the other leaders, the employees do not necessarily look at it the same way. One thing most employees wish for is a manager who really cares about them. Now, you may care a great deal about your employees but if all you talk about are numbers and money it is unlikely they will get that message. Numbers are fine when it comes to benchmarking and to see how you are improving but even when you've had a great year numbers can get in the way of your message. Perhaps, last year you cut your injuries in half from twelve to six. While this is a great improvement, in the midst of celebrating your best year ever there are six people who didn't have such a great year because they were hurt. Remind everyone that success is hurting fewer and fewer people until the list is blank!

Next week I will share with you a technique I just picked up yesterday. I want to thank you for the comments many of you have sent me in response to this newsletter. If you enjoy what I present here I would encourage you to consider attending this year's Dynamic Safety Meetings Institute, October 8,9,10, 2003. If you want more information go to, http://www.drebinger.com/page/page26.html Or
better yet call our Institute Director,
Sandie Gilbert at 1-866-373-2464.
Be sure to ask her about the discount you receive when more than one person attends from your company.
Have a dynamically safe day,
John Drebinger
