#4. Regularly allows people to miss safety meetings.
As I travel around the country speaking to employees and safety team members, I am fascinated by the varied policies regarding safety meetings. I can tell you a lot about the commitment of a supervisor, manager, or other leader by the attendance of their employees at a safety meeting. I also learn a lot by their personal level of attendance. Regarding the first, too often I have heard someone explain as I was being taken on a tour of the facility that they had to miss the meeting because their supervisor wanted them to do something other than attend the meeting. I know right then that the message the employee receives is that safety is not that important. No matter what that leader says, their actions tell the real story. Now, I know there are always going to be certain situations when someone cannot get away for the meeting, so what is the real test? The way you know is what is the consistent pattern. If the leader consistently allows people to miss a safety meeting the message is clear. If it is the rare exception then everyone knows that, as well. What message are you or your leaders sending?
The second issue is are your leaders attending safety meetings. I am not suggesting that if you have several meetings to cover several shifts that they attend every one. What I do suggest is that they attend one and you make sure it is mentioned at the other meetings that the leader was at the other meeting so the employees understand their commitment.
