Selling Safety

Have you ever thought of yourself as a salesperson? Maybe that is what we really do in the safety field, sell people on the idea of working safely. For a salesperson, serving the customer's needs and closing the sale is the outcome. For us, serving the employees and getting them to work safely is our outcome. If you think of it, both require that you get someone else to take action. I have discovered that over the years I have learned some of my most valuable communication lessons from the field of sales and marketing. Afterall, if one of the purposes of communication is to get a result, it could be looked upon as sales. Using sales as a model for safety communication also fits my preference to convince people to work safely rather than forcing them to do so.

So, how good are you as a safety sales person? What could you do to improve your skills? Well, I suggest you do what I have done and learn from top sales experts. This brings us to an
