ATTENTION FOR THOSE ATTENDING ASSE PDC CHECK OUT NOTICE AT END OF TODAYS REPORT
And now on with the show:
A CLEVER WAY TO KEEP PEOPLE'S ATTENTION FOR YOUR ENTIRE MEETING !
When you are making a presentation that has four points to it try the following. Begin by saying you have five points (that's right, five, not four) you want to cover today during the meeting. Go through each one and on to the next. When you get done with point four thank them for their attention and finish your presentation. What happens here is that the person listening is looking for completion. If you have four points and tell them that, when they hear you are on your last point they unconsciously shut down because they know you are almost done. My friend, Scott Geller, tells me that a study was done years ago that proves this concept. It had something to do with puzzles. If you see him at ASSE, NSC, or another safety conference ask him for the details. He begins to glow when talking about research!
Now you know why last week I told you there was one more issue in the Mistakes Leaders Make series, when in fact, it was the last in the series.
If you want to learn other ways to keep people's attention for your entire meeting give Sandie Gilbert a call and she will get you information about our Third Annual Dynamic Safety Meetings
Institute to be held October 8,9,10, 2003. Call her at 1-866-373-2464 or 209-747-2770.
