Common Mistakes Leaders Make in
Communicating Safety

#13. Not Involving an Audience!

Before I begin let me involve you in giving me input as to how often you would like to receive these email newsletters on communication skills. Please hit reply and type in either "weekly" or "every other week".

Thanks for your help now on with this weeks report. It seems to me that it is cruel to ask an audience to sit and not be involved in a presentation. Does this mean you have to get everyone up out of their seats and have them join you in front of the room? No. How then can you involve an audience? First, begin by making the presentation appropriate for them. Is it relevant to their life or the job they do? If not, how could you make it relevant? Sometimes companies use video training and it doesn't quite fit their audience. This can be overcome by your giving some warm-up information ahead of time. Ask questions, or tell a story that will make a connection between the video and the audience.

Remember, when you go to a movie, they don't go up on stage but the director does get you involved. Involved in the story, the characters, and the excitement or romance. Look around you everyday to see how every form of entertainment or even a commercial on the television works hard to involve you. Sometimes they do it through humor. You are laughing at the show
or commercial and therefore you are involved. An involved audience is paying closer attention and is more likely to learn what you are teaching.
