HAPPY THANKSGIVING
I have so much to be thankful for during the past year. I hope
all is the same for you. Much of our ability to be thankful is
a function of constantly looking for that which we can be
thankful. As for me, my mom passed away this May but the real
blessing was I was in town and sat by her side on her last day.
My parents and I had always assumed I would be out of town when
they died but God allowed me a window to be there. It was a
great day because of all the fabulous memories my parents and
I had as I grew up and through the lives of my children. The
weekend after she passed away my editor, Sandie Gilbert and I
made a pre-scheduled trip to Southern California and I showed
Sandie many of my childhood haunts that my mom and I frequented.
From the beach, to the mountains, and to the home in which I
grew up.

I am especially thankful for each of you. Without an audience,
a speaker can be a lonely person. Each of you allows me to do
what I do for a living and for that I appreciate you. For those
of you who have had me speak at your company this year, thanks.
For those of you who have been in my audience, thanks. For those
of you who have requested me to return to your company or
organization, thanks. To those of you who read this newsletter,
thanks. To those of you who reply to the newsletter with a
quick note, thanks for taking the time. For those of you who
have used the ideas I have shared with you, thank you very much.
For those of you who have written or called to share with me how
something I taught you helped make you more effective, thanks.

My family is always having trouble trying to find out what to
buy me for a Christmas or birthday gift. I usually provide them
with the answer just in time. If you have appreciated the
service I have provided you over this year or past years the
best thank you I can ever receive is when you hire me to serve
you again. Also, it is a wonderful thanks when you recommend me
with such
enthusiasm that someone else decides to bring me in to speak. I
can tell you that in the speaking business over 95% of all
speaking engagements come from personal referrals. Without you,
I would have to find a different career. If you are looking for
an occasion to bring me to your organization or company for the
first time or as a repeat, perhaps the following ideas might
prove useful.

CELEBRATING SAFETY
How often are you celebrating your commitment to safety?
In just a few weeks, the new year begins. Traditionally, we take
some time at the end of one year before the beginning of another to
review our accomplishments and set new goals for the year ahead.
Another value to the begining of a new year is that we get to
start over and imagine how we can do better than we did last
year. If last year was great, we aim even higher. If last year
was less than we hoped for, it allows us to start fresh and get
back into success mode. So how are you starting the new year?
One great way is to have a safety kickoff or celebration.
Something special that reminds everyone that safety is a journey
and not a destination. For those who had a safe year they need
to re-commit to their safety focus on and off the job. For those
who experienced incidents, it is a time to realize that safety is
a daily commitment that you can always begin anew.

MY FAVORITE SAFETY CELEBRATION IDEAS
My favorite is to hold a celebration kickoff meeting where you
bring in a special speaker or presentation. It is important to
hold this for all your shifts as it is easy to send the message
to the smaller or later shifts that they don't count. I can tell
you from personal experience they really appreciate it. I often
give multiple presentations in one day (by the way all for one
daily fee) thus reaching the entire workforce. Each January and
February I spend several days at different companies. I can tell
you a few things that help when you are going to do something
special. First, schedule several times for the celebration.
Second, if possible, hold them on a few successive days. Why?
First, to reach everyone but secondly, and really more
importantly, to let the word spread. If your employees are not
excited about attending a safety meeting you have to let them
hear from their fellow workers that the celebration is not to be
missed.

Assuming the mere fact that you are doing something special will
draw large crowds is often a mistake. You may be suffering from
the reputation of previous events that were less than
outstanding. I love how with each presentation and each day I am
at a location the crowds grow as the word gets out how unique,
fun, and special my presentation was and how they never expected
a safety meeting to be this much fun.

How can I help you? Give my marketing director, Diane Weiss, a
quick call at 1-800-588-9419 and tell her you want me to come to
your location to make a special safety meeting the best it can
be. I still have a few openings left in January and February so
if you are one of the first people to call her you may be able
to get one. I look forward to speaking to your team again or for
the first time. Remember, I have a series of safety
presentations so I can come back year after year with an
entirely new presentation. That way you can do something
different and also be able to count on having a great meeting.

Thanks again for allowing me to serve you and your team.
Yours in Service,
John Drebinger
