Presentation Skills and Career Success
How many hours, days, weeks, months, or years have you trained for
your career? For the skilled craftsperson, they have devoted
years of their life to be the experienced person they are today.
Some people, having chosen the path of higher education, have
earned one or more degrees in their field. Others have attained
professional certifications in their field of endeavor. All of
these give us the knowledge to do an excellent job. However, in
today's workplace, we often must do more than just our job. Many
of you have been called upon by circumstances or by your company
to make presentations as part of your job. That is where the
problem arises. We have a wealth of skilled people in the
workforce who have never been taught or trained in presentation
skills.
Presentation skills can make the difference between successful
communication and failure. Over and over, I hear from companies
who want to improve their safety performance. They have the
knowledge of what people should do. They even know what to teach
or train them. What they lack is any education and training in
the skills that will get their message across. In the past
several weeks, I have seen this in several different forums.
None of the references I am about to make are my clients. They
are individuals I have seen in action recently. I saw the Chief
Executive Officer of an organization and the President of the
same organization give speeches that were very ineffective.
Whoever let them on stage without any coaching should lose
their job. They looked incompetent to the entire audience. It is
sad because they are both great people but without the
presentation skills they were ineffective. What is really
important isn't how they looked but how their message was lost
in the weak presentation.
When it comes to safety, much more is at stake. The safety and
lives of you and your fellow employees.
In spite of the importance of the messages you and your
associates must deliver, very little if any is invested in
teaching and training you to be successful in your
presentations. When you took on the job of safety, whether as a
volunteer on a committee or as a professional, you probably were
taught about many aspects of safety. But no one gave you the
communication skills you needed to be successful.
So what is the solution? There are several. First, I can highly
recommend Toastmasters International (www.toastmasters.org)
By attending their meetings, you can, over time, improve your
skills. If you invest the time, you will see improvement.
One secret I learned many years ago is that there are ways to
accelerate our learning and our success. This can be done by
doing intensive study or immersion in a subject, for a
concentrated time, with an expert that can share with you the
secrets they have taken years to learn or discover.
One such opportunity is coming up this October. You will be able
to learn and put into practice in three days what it would take
you years to discover on your own. I will be holding my
Dynamic Presentations Institute in Las Vegas, October 5th, 6th
and 7th. For three exciting days, I will share with you the
secrets I have learned in my speaking career as well as the
wisdom I have learned from my fellow members of the National
Speaker's Association.
Most of you have seen me speak in person and know that I am
passionate about reaching people with an effective safety
message. I can tell you from the depths of my heart I wish all
of you could join me so I could share with you the vast
ammount of information that I will cover in three days. The
total immersion into the topic allows you to get the most out of
it. Also, the class will be less than twenty-five people which
will allow you to get any questions and concerns you have
answered personally. There will also be opportunities to do
live presentations for critique and coaching, if you desire.
So, take a moment and ask your leadership to invest in the
succcess of their safety program by getting you the skills you
need. If you need more information, please call Sandie
Gilbert at 1-866-373-2464. She can email you further information
and answer any of your questions.
Or go to: http://www.drebinger.com/page/page26.html on our
website. I can also answer any questions if you call me on my
cellular phone 1-209-747-9645. I look foward to seeing you
there.
What if your company won't send you? Then come on your own. I
will guarantee you will learn skills that will help you succeed
in your career and your personal life. If you are coming on your
own, please let our Institute Director, Sandie Gilbert know as she
can make you a special offer.
Yours in service,
John Drebinger
