LOGISTICAL NOTE!
Next week, we will be sending this newsletter using a new service that will allow us to be more efficient. The addressthat it is coming from will be: johndrebinger@myemailmanager.com The subject line will be the same as before. If you do not receive it by Wednesday October 27th email me so we can fix the problem. We will be sending the next newsletter next Monday or Tuesday. It would be very helpful to me if you answer any survey question you find in next week's edition. Also, next week, I have exciting news from our recent Dynamic Safety Meetings Institute. Which will be at the end of the newsletter.
Now for todays topic:
CONGRUENCY - How consistent is your message?
What do you do when a fire alarm sounds? Do you get up and walk to someplace safe or do you wait to see if the alarm is real? What you do tells people around you how serious you are about safety. Do you always use your safety belt in a car or do you leave it off in parking lots, etc.? Do you make exceptions for wearing personal protective equipment or do you always use it?
Just a few short weeks ago, I had the privelege of seeing an organization display integrity and congruency in their message. As you may know, the National Safety Council's annual Congress was being held in New Orleans September 14-16th. As you also know, hurricane Ivan was aiming for the gulf coast at the same time. Monday morning, I arrived to check out the room I would be speaking in that afternoon. I enjoyed sitting in on Scott Geller's presentation which went from 10am to 11:30am. We all knew that at 10am the city leadership was meeting and would announce what evacuation plans were appropriate. The leadership of the National Safety Council took a courageous position and decided to close the conference. This was no small decision. Exhibitors packed up their displays, speakers, like me, packed up our materials and headed out the door. Thousands, if not millions,of dollars were sacrificed to protect the over 10,000 attendees.
As I have mentioned before, values are tested when things are tough. It is easy for the National Safety Council to talk about safety, but it is difficult to make a decision as they did. Especially when the hurricane turned and never came near the city. I want to congratulate them for sending the best safety message they could. Their actions told us they really do believe in safe behavior. They chose not to take a risk and see what would happen.
So, how congruent are you?
Yours in service,
John Drebinger
P.S.
Diane Weiss, my Marketing Director, is always nervous that someone might think the purpose of the Institute is to train safety professionals to do presentations so they don't have to hire me or other professional speakers in the future. No Way! The difference is that I teach you how to make your weekly and monthly safety presentations more effective. The reason you bring me to your company is to bring a message that has been developed and honed over fourteen years to create the greatest impact at a special event such as a safety kickoff, quarterly safety meeting, or safety celebration. Also, as an outside presenter, I bring validation to what you and your corporate leadership have been saying for years. Even Jesus said, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country." If a speaker who was good enough for his messages to be heard had this problem, why should you expect otherwise. Bringing in outside speakers and experts will always have value.
So give Diane a call and let her know when you want me to come speak at your facility. She can be reached at 800-588-9419.
Yours in service,
John Drebinger
