Music and Preparing an Audience for a Presentation.

I have a favor to ask. Sometime in the last year I was listening to someone do a safety presentation and they made reference to the percentages of people that return to work following a disabling injury. The reference was made that after being off the job for “x” weeks “x” percent of people never return to any kind of work in their lifetime. If you have this information please email it to me at: john@drebinger.com

In this issue we will discuss a technique of preparing an audience for your meeting, training session or seminar.

Imagine if you had a way to increase the energy of your audience even before you began your presentation. Well, the key to achieving this is to remember that the success of your presentation begins before you say your first words or show your first video. As people are entering the room you can set the energy of the audience by playing music. The secret to increasing the energy of the people is to choose the right music. Do you choose what people want to hear? Do you play something pleasant in the background. Perhaps some “elevator” music or the music that you hear when you are on hold waiting to talk to a customer service representative. Well, the last line was a hint.

The music you hear when you are on hold is designed to calm you down, slow your heart rate and lower your energy level. When you start a presentation you want your audience, “pumped up”. The right music can do this for you.

The type of music you are looking for is fast, loud, and should actually be irritating. When people come in they must talk louder to be heard over the music and this gets their heart beating faster. The result is an audience that is awake and alert, ready for your message. In a future issue I will list some titles that fit this category.

The time to play this music is about three to five minutes before you begin and as a signal for about three minutes as you end each break. When used at the close of a break it serves as a return announcement.

An important note: If you are playing music in public you must be licensed by ASCAP/BMI or use music you have permission to play in public.

Readers of this electronic newsletter come from many places. Some have seen me speak at a convention or association meeting, their company safety meeting or some other event. Some have read my book, “Mastering Safety Communication”. Others have just been surfing the internet and discovered my website. Because of this I thought I would take the second half of this and the next few issues to let you know a little about the presentations I have available for your company or organization.

For employee safety meetings my first presentation is called, “Ensure Your Safety” It is designed for a safety meeting, kickoff, celebration or any time you want all of the employees at your location to be motivated to work safely.

“Ensure Your Safety” will:

Get your employees to take personal responsibility for their own safety on and off their jobs; Help your employees become "safety models" for others; Create a positive association between safety and their jobs; Show how working safely directly benefits the employees and their families, today and in the future; and will be a reminder that safety meetings that are fun and informative helps people re-focus on safety! I help your employees to believe that safety is everyone's responsibility, not just the safety team or management. They will discover that when they take personal responsibility for their own safety they really get the best benefit. When you combine employees who have taken personal responsibility with a management team that is committed to a safe workplace your safety performance will improve dramatically. I give you a safety meeting they will remember and talk about for months. You'll get employees that are excited about taking personal responsibility for their safety on the job and at home. Everyone will want to do what it takes to protect themselves. They'll realize that safety and their job go together. They'll think about how working safely results in a bright future for themselves and their families.

You'll even get employees who enjoy a "Safety Meeting" for the first time! Through stories and magic they'll be involved, motivated and leave wanting more...there's always a next time!
