Effective Storytelling

First an announcement.

On Tuesday October 8th 1:30pm to 3:00pm. I will be speaking at the National Safety Council's National Congress in San Diego California. I will be doing what they call a Blockbuster session. We have been told the room will seat 1,000. I would appreciate it if you joined me to help fill the room and make the best presentation possible. If you are attending come early and bring your fellow safety associates. As I always do I will be presenting new information different than what I presented in previous years at the National Safety Council. I believe I owe it to you to always have fresh and new material for you to improve your skills in communicating safety effectively.

The title and the description of the session are listed below:

COMMUNICATION AND MOTIVATIONAL TECHNIQUES
TO IMPROVE SAFETY

You are looking for ways to communicate your safety message as effectively as possible because you know what is at stake, the lives of your employees. You want to learn how to put more passion and energy into your message and practice successful techniques to motivate yourself and others. Learn how to help correct un-resourceful behaviors in a positive and inoffensive way and discover new ways to rekindle the vision, passion, and energy of yourself and others when presenting your next fun safety meeting. Tuesday Oct. 8th 1:30pm to 3:00pm.

NOW FOR THIS WEEK'S REPORT

Effective Storytelling

One key to a successful story is telling it in such a way that the audience can identify with the characters in the story. If you think of the great works of literature and successful movies of today, they all have characters that you find yourself identifying with. There is a great movie I recommend you rent. It is called, "October Sky". It is the story of boys growing up in the shadow of the space race with the then Soviet Union. The story is inspirational and the characters are ones you can identify with so much so that you feel yourself in the story. As good as the movie is the book is even better as the author has more time than a movie allows to develop the characters, their struggles, joys, and victories. Take notes when you watch a movie or read a book. Notice how the author develops the story and the characters. Think how you could use the same style in telling a safety story.

We will discuss more on stories next week. Let me know what you think of "October Sky" after you see it. I always read all email and comments you send. God bless each of you as you protect His children by helping them work safely.

May all of you traveling to join me in Las Vegas for the Dynamic Safety Meetings Institute have a safe journey. I can't wait to share with you three days of motivational magic.

Have a dynamically safe day,

John Drebinger
