The Power of Stories

I just spent the last week at the OSHA Volunteer Protection Program Participants Association Convention in Orlando. What a great group of people committed to helping people work safely.

I had the privelege of sitting in on several great presentations. I did my presentation on overcoming barriers to communication on two different days. Thanks to all of you who came to hear my presentation. As you know I always do a different presentation at each convention so if you heard me last year you will hear something new this year. It was great to have the room filled to overflowing each day. We have some great pictures of people listening from outside the door. I consider it a privelege that so many of you invest your valuable time to read this newsletter and to take the time to listen to my presentations.

Over and over again people would come up to me telling me how much they appreciated how I used stories in my teaching. They also noted that the best presenters of the conference had one thing in common, they told stories.

Let's take a minute to think about the significance of stories and safety. First most people enjoy stories. From the time we were children we have enjoyed stories. Much of entertainment is a form of a story. Books, movies, songs, television all employ stories. Stories can teach, entertain, enlighten, and motivate all at once. Because of this we as safety professionals should consider using stories to accomplish these tasks. My next newsletter will discuss some aspects of effective storytelling.

Two weeks from tonight I will have completed day one of my Dynamic Safety Meetings Institute. There is still time and a few seats left if you call now. If you send more than one person from your company the first person is full price and all others go at half price. ($1997 first person, $997 all ohters). I can assure you this will be the most valuable three days of learning you will experience. If you really want to spend some time learning how to make safety meetings motivating and effective I encourage you to join me for a special event. I believe so much that this event will help you that I guarantee it 100%. If by noon of the second day you do not believe it will help you be more effective motivating employees then let our staff know and we will refund your tuition on the spot. Me and fifty other safety professionals will invest three days learning and discovering how to make safety meetings dynamic. Seats are filling up for this years, Dynamic Safety Meetings Institute, October 2-4, 2002, in Las Vegas Nevada. I will be presenting some of my best and newest material on how to get the best value for the time you and your company already invest in safety meetings.
